The EH&S Manager is responsible for serving as a staff specialist environmental, health, safety, and worker’s compensation.  The EH&S Manager leads the safety initiative by increasing safety awareness and reducing work-related accidents and injuries.  The EH&S Manager creates and implements programs, policies, and procedures in the organization to effectively control accident and health exposures in the company that meet or exceed compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. 

Responsibilities

  • Assist employees in understanding OSHA regulations and standards, including guidance and handling OSHA compliance, inspections and citations; prepare and submit required OSHA, DOT, and ADEM reports.
  • Evaluate and communicate hazardous conditions and practices; develop hazard control practices and programs.
  • Monitor company’s accident statistics and makes recommendations for correction of problem areas; prepare monthly safety stats for review.
  • Participates and leads employee improvement teams to emphasize safety, housekeeping, and waste/cost reduction; promotes programs and encourages employee participation.
  • Maintains accurate and complete Environmental, Health and Safety records in accordance with governing regulations and company policies. Ensures that OSHA record-keeping and reporting requirements are met.
  • Ensure the timely and cost-effective medical treatment of injured employees and the resolution of their worker’s compensation cases.
  • Develop, implement, and communicate policies, procedures and standards while ensuring conformance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies and organizational objectives.
  • Partner with the Human Resources department on employee relations issues, worker’s compensation, and medical leaves of absences.
  • Oversees case management of Workers Compensation cases. Works closely with insurance providers and adjustors to ensure timely and safe return to work for injured employees.
  • Coordinate safety and industrial hygiene services of insurance carriers to obtain optimum service.
  • Assess new developments in the health and safety field that may have application to the company’s operations.
  • Conducts incident/accident investigations including “root cause analysis” for corrective action. Trains management personnel on incident investigations and proper documentation.  Primary contact for OSHA inspections and incident/accident audits.
  • Organize, maintain, and chair the employee Safety Committee; conduct Safety Meetings and keep employees current on safety performance; conduct safety training as needed.  
  • Conducts EHS program training for all employees. Develops and conducts new training programs as needed.  Participates in new hire orientation process by conducting required safety training.
  • Implement an effective ergonomic improvement process; seek, identify, and eliminate any deterrent to maximum work capacity; limit worker fatigue and discomfort while improving process efficiency and productivity.
  • Facilitate on-the-job training to assure new hires are in the correct job with the right tools and instruction to perform their jobs safely and effectively.
  • Conduct Safety Orientation of all new hires; mentor and follow-up on all new hires during trail period to gather safety ideas and evaluate safety culture.
  • Maintain a regular presence on the production floor to develop a rapport with all employees and assist with employee inquiries around plant safety goals and metrics.
  • Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating environmental policy, procedures; reviews all work instructions to ensure that all safety issues are identified and properly documented.
  • Serves as primary contact with all federal, state, and local regulatory bodies; interfaces between regulatory bodies and, corporate personnel, insurance representatives, legal and others in order to ensure all requirements are met.
  • Maintains SDS program and ensures that all employees are trained in their use. Monitors and approves all chemicals that are used in the plant to ensure proper use, labeling and storage.
  • Investigate accidents to identify their causes and develop countermeasures to prevent them in the future.
  • Conduct quarterly Operation Clean Sweep audits and report finding in GDC.
  • Develop and report monthly EHS Metrics to leadership.
  • Update Safety and EHS Framework boards on a monthly basis and report updates to management team.
  • Perform other related functions and duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Engineering, Business Management, or related field preferred or the equivalent experience in safety in a manufacturing environment; high school diploma or GED required.
  • Professional certification in Environmental, Health, and Safety preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience as a safety leader, preferably in a manufacturing environment; experience in a Human Resource environment is desirable.
  • Basic computer skills plus a working knowledge of computer software applications for word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Well-versed in state and federal laws, policies and regulations pertaining to Occupational Safety and Health, Worker’s compensation, and employment practices.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and presentation skills including the ability to prepare the presentation.
  • Must be able to work independently on multiple tasks while dealing with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Develop workable implementation plans; communicate changes effectively; build commitment and overcomes resistance; prepare and support those affected by change.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adhere to Berry’s Safety, Health, and Environmental Vision, Policy, and Standards.
  • Primarily a day shift office position with a flexible work schedule.
  • Ability to stand, sit, kneel, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and crawl for extended periods multiple times per day.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to work in warm, humid, and cool climates.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) which includes safety glasses, safety goggles, hearing protection, steel toe shoes/boots, face shield, gloves, and face mask.
